GCNV October Luncheon – We Apologize, this Event is Cancelled
October 17 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm$10.00
UNLV has been diverting food waste since May 2009. In the beginning, materials were sent to a composting facility by Nellis Air Force Base, but in 2014, food waste was picked up by RC Farms, a local pig farm (now Las Vegas Livestock). Landscape waste has been diverted to composting since 2011. In December 2017, UNLV purchased an in-vessel composter. All food waste and some landscape waste is now composted on campus. The in-vessel composter has allowed UNLV to return to planning and hosting zero waste events. The hope is that the UNLV Student Union will be the first zero-waste public building in Nevada. The facility has recently installed compost collection bins in all the meeting rooms. Tara will give the Green Chamber an overview of how the composter is operated, and the goals for increasing campus sustainability.
Our Speaker – Tara Pike Nordstrom
Tara Pike is the founder and current manager of the UNLV Rebel Recycling Program. She started the campus recycling center 23 years ago after completing an undergraduate senior thesis about the feasibility of starting a recycling program for UNLV. The university recycled 905 tons of materials last year of which 195.5 tons was food waste. Tara is passionate about continuing the diversion of recyclable and compostable materials but is also keen on increasing the waste reduction of the campus. Tara recently lobbied UNLV to purchased an in vessel composter so organic waste can be composted on-site. Tara served on the 2006 and 2007 Clark County Recycling Advisory Committee that proposed the Enhanced Curbside Recycling Pilot Program that has since lead to improved curbside recycling for North Las Vegas, Henderson and Clark County. Tara is also in her sixth year as the co-chair of the Southern Nevada Christmas Tree Recycling (and pumpkins) Committee and has been a member of the committee for over 20 years. Tara is an avid camper, hiker, gardener and at-home composter. She is actively working to convert her two acres of land, located one mile from Las Vegas Boulevard, into a farm.
