GCNV August Luncheon – The Farm to School Connection

August 15, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Our Topic

When students go through the process of planting, cultivating and picking food, they learn lessons that last a lifetime.  And schools and students benefit through higher test scores, better attendance, better graduation rates and more.  Farming in schools creates healthier and better citizens.

Our Speakers

Melissa Blynn has been the Executive Director of Create a Change Now since 2013. With her background in nutrition, fitness, and mental health, she knows the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle and implementing a balance between mind, body, and spirit to support the overall well-being of each individual. Melissa has enjoyed dedicating her time to coaching children and families on nutrition education and physical fitness and recognizes the importance of education in prevention methods around health and wellness. Melissa has developed a natural leadership role in implementing health programs for the Clark County School District for the Las Vegas community. With her knowledge and passion, she leads Create a Change to having a positive impact on the health and wellness of the next generation and the future leaders of our city.

“I am so honored to be living my passion and helping so many women, children and families live a healthier life with the Healthy School, Healthy Life programs that Create a Change Now has to offer as well as public speaking all over the world to instill change within.” Melissa Blynn

Bryan Vellinga, owner of Garden Farms of Nevada and President of the Board of Directors for Garden Farms Foundation, has been in the landscaping and gardening industry in Las Vegas for over 25 years. After growing up in the beautiful countryside of western Montana, he graduated with a degree in horticulture. He is the former Director of Horticulture at MGM Resort properties, such as Beau Rivage and Bellagio. Bryan has been growing vegetables in the desert for 15 years and has successfully proven an uncanny ability to grow vegetables and fruit trees throughout our harsh desert climates in Nevada. He’s married to the lovely Brittany Vellinga (co-owner and operator of Garden Farms of Nevada) and together they have five beautiful children. He has lived in Las Vegas since 1987. In his spare time, Bryan enjoys fly fishing, food preservation, spending time with his wife and family and (of course) gardening.
